As player characters overcome challenges, they become more experienced. By exploring the supernatural threats that lurk in the dark corners of the world, they learn and grow and grow more competent.
In short, they earn experience points (xp), which the player can spend to improve to their character's traits.
Special XP: This game tracks 2 types of XP: normal xp, and "Special XP". Normal xp can be spent on anything, but the Special XP can only be spent on things related to the character's "creature type", such as Excellence, Masteries, Endowments, or supernatural powers (Blessings, Aspects, Rituals, Psychic Powers, etc).

Spending XP
Most of the time, experience points are spent to buy dots, whether it's to increase the dot-rating of a trait your already have (f.ex. attributes), or to buy dots in a new trait (f.ex. a new merit, or a special power).
The cost is determined by the dot-level you're trying to achieve, as listed above, and you can't "skip" over levels. That is, in order to get from (for instance) Strength 1 to Strength 4, you have to buy Str 2, Str 3 and Str 4, paying for each of those steps. You can't just spend the xp for Str 4, and skip directly from 1 to 4.
The same is true of Merits, even the ones which have a set dot-rating.
F.ex: If there is a merit which only exists as a 3-dot trait, you have to spend enough xp to pay for the 1st dot, then the 2nd dot, as well as the 3rd dot.
As another example, if you have Resources 1 and want to increase that to Resources 2, that costs 4 experience. However, if you do not currently have the resources merit, buying "Resources 2" costs 6 xp, as you need to spend 2 xp on the first dot, and 4 xp on the second dot. Further, buying "Danger Sense", a 2-dot merit where both dots must be bought together, costs 6 xp total.
For ease of use, here's the final costs of merit ratings, already summed up:level | ● | ●● | ●●● | ●●●● | ●●●●● |
